Topological Charge Membranes in 2D and 4D Gauge Theory

Local topological charge structure in the 2D CP(N-1) sigma models is studied using the overlap Dirac operator. Long-range coherence of topological charge along locally 1D regions in 2D space-time is observed. We discuss the connection between these results and the recent discovery of coherent 3D sheets of topological charge in 4D QCD. In both cases, coherent regions of topological charge form along surfaces of approximmate codimension 1.Comment: Lattice2004(topology

Decays rates for S- and P-wave bottomonium

We use the Bodwin-Braaten-Lepage factorization scheme to separate the long- and short-distance factors that contribute to the decay rates of Υ\Upsilon, ηb\eta_b (S-wave) and χb\chi_b,hbh_b (P-wave). The long distance matrix elements are calculated on the lattice in the quenched approximation using a non-relativistic formulation of the bb quark dynamics.Comment: 3 pages Latex using espcrc2.sty and epsf.sty + 2 postscript figure

The Charm Quark on the Lattice

We formulate lattice fermions in a way that encompasses Wilson fermions as well as the static and non-relativistic approximations. In particular, we treat mqam_qa systematically (mqm_q is the fermion mass) showing how to understand the Wilson action as an effective action for systems with \vek{p}\ll m_q. The results show how to extract matrix elements and the spectrum from simulations with mqa1m_qa\approx1, which is relevant for the charm quark.Comment: 4 pages LaTeX using espcrc2.sty and epsf.sty. Binding Energies in Nonrelativistic Field Theories

    Get PDF
Relativistic corrections communicate the binding energy of a bound state to its kinetic mass. This mechanism is reviewed and used to explain anomalous results of Collins, Edwards, Heller, and Sloan (hep-lat/9512026), which compared rest and kinetic masses of heavy-light mesons and quarkonia.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, poster presented at LATTICE96(heavy quarks

Low-Lying Dirac Eigenmodes, Topological Charge Fluctuations and the Instanton Liquid Model

The local structure of low-lying eigenmodes of the overlap Dirac operator is studied. It is found that these modes cannot be described as linear combinations of 't Hooft "would-be" zeromodes associated with instanton excitations that underly the Instanton Liquid Model. This implies that the instanton liquid scenario for spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in QCD is not accurate. More generally, our data suggests that the vacuum fluctuations of topological charge are not effectively dominated by localized lumps of unit charge with which the topological "would-be" zeromodes could be associated.Comment: Presented by I. The eta-prime propagator in quenched QCD

The calculation of the eta-prime hairpin diagram is carried out in the modified quenched approximation (MQA) in which the lattice artifact which causes exceptional configurations is removed by shifting observed poles at kappa<kappa_c in the quark propagators to the critical value of hop ping parameter. By this method, the eta-prime propagator can be accurately calculated even for very light quark mass. A determination of the topological susceptibility for quenched QCD is also obtained, using the fermionic method of Smit and Vink to calculate winding numbers.Comment: 3 pages, 3 postscript figure

Managing Stress in a Time of Increased Pressure: Perspectives from University Presidents

    Get PDF
The modern university presidency continues to become more complex, resulting in numerous personal and professional stresses placed on a president. This study explores the sources, impacts, and successful prevention and management of stress in the position. Data for the study comes from qualitative phenomenological interviews with five sitting presidents of public and private universities in the United States. Using a theoretical lens derived from executive stress theory, the authors examine the degree to which a need for personal control and stability play a role in producing stress and motivating certain stress responses. Meaningful relationships, positive mindsets, and repeatable practices of self-care and reflection are found to have a positive impact on presidents’ ability to manage stress. Greater awareness of stress management through education and training will benefit presidents and prospective presidents in navigating the position

b-quark decay in the collinear approximation

    Get PDF
The semileptonic decay of a b-quark, b--> c l nu, is considered in the relativistic limit where the decay products are approximately collinear. Analytic results for the double differential lepton energy distributions are given for finite charm-quark mass. Their use for the fast simulation of isolated lepton backgrounds from heavy quark decays is discussed.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure, submitted to Phys.Rev.
